Over the last eight years the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has approved 142 manufacturing projects to begin operations in Terengganu with total direct capital investments of over RM28.1 billion (US$7.4 billion) During the economic slowdown of 1998, MITI approved over RM7 billion (US$1.8 billion) capital investments for Terengganu, of which over 80% involve petrochemical projects.

 Over the last decade, the Malaysian economy recorded encouraging annualgrowth rates averaging 8% with inflation kept below 4% per year.Terengganu tags along with an average with an average growth rate at 6.2%, with a vibrant growth contribution from here manufacturing sector which increased at an average of over 15% annually before the world economic recession.
